This year Pongal celebrations were really special and we had a wonderful Pongal this year. I was wondering what would we be getting in this desert and that too an Islamic State. Inga sarvamum sampoornama kadiakudhu and we are also not stopped or prohibited from doing/following our customs.
I was surprised to see that we get everything, literally everything that we get in India. Right from the colour podi for the kolam (Rangoli) to vaazhaelai, Manja kezhangu, Maa-elai and Karumbu!
There was nothing that I missed this Pongal. Starting from Poli on Bhogi pandigai, Amma made Venn Pongal, Chakara pongal, tirukannamadu and vadai yesterday and Kannu kootu (similar to Aviyal) , thenga saadam, puliyodharai ,thayirsadam and my favorite Paal payasam today :D. Performed the "Kaaka-Kuruvi" Kalyanam and :D got a special gift from my wonderful anna :P Its afterall for him that we celebrate this pandigai and if he doesnt take care well, then wat is the use?? ;) He has promised me a surprise so still waiting for that surprise gift. Enaikum illada doubt iniki vandhuchu.. why do we say kaakaikum kuruvikum kalyanam? Apo munadi kaalathula kaaka kuruvi matum inter caste marriage panikalaama?? ;) Nalla kadhaiya iruke.. hmm will have to ask my amma the reason for this.. may be elders have something to say.. ada ipadi solivechutu poirukanga pola iruke :P
Overall my trip to Kuwait was wonderful. Two more days and back to base.

Naane kashta pattu onu onna padichen... kadaisilal antha pal payasam potu yenna clean bolwed aakiteenga... I miss pongal.. Karumbu... everything... Sat'ku anupum bothu yenakkum serthu anupunga...along with Pal Payasam :)
BTW what is this Kaakaikum Kuruvikkum Kalyanam?? I have heard of it... plz explain :)

@MJ welcome back. Ena ivalo naal kanama poitenga? Y no updates in blog? Belated Pongal and new year wishes to you. And yes, manjal kezhangu kadaikradhu was a surprise for me too and its very nice to know that distance is not a barrier and how much the world has shrunk.

and the Kaakaa kum kuruvikkum kalyanam is that - The girls and Ladies of the house get up early in the morning on the Kannum pongal day and after taking bath (or in few houses without taking bath) perform a kannu pidi veithal function. They take the left out of yesterdays pongal and add little colour to it like manjal podi and nelangu sadam and serve it for the birds saying Kaakakum kurivikum Kalyanam. And also tie the pongal paanai la katina mangal kezhangu around their neck like that done on kaaradayaam nombu/ the varalakshmi viradham. The kaaradayaam or varalakshmi nombu is for the husband/ wouldbe and this kaanum nombu is for the health and well being of the girls brother.
This day the brother serves food for his sister and then eats afterwards.
